Classification of procedure
Surgery can be classified as clean, clean-contaminated or contaminated.
As a rule-of-thumb, Antibiotic prophylaxis is depends on classification of procedure:
Clean procedures: No Prophylaxis is usually required,
although sometimes prophylaxis may be indicated if there is an increased risk of infection or if the patient is immunosupressed
Scientific evidence indicates that no more than one dose is required for short procedures, although the common practice is to give 24 hours prophylaxis
Contaminated procedures: Treatment course may be required for 5-7 days, although this refers to treatment rather than prophylaxis
