Prevention of Surgical Infection Through Education

Classification of procedure

Surgery can be classified as clean, clean-contaminated or contaminated.

As a rule-of-thumb, Antibiotic prophylaxis is depends on classification of procedure:

Clean procedures: No Prophylaxis is usually required, although sometimes prophylaxis may be indicated if there is an increased risk of infection or if the patient is immunosupressed

Clean-contaminated procedures: Scientific evidence indicates that no more than one dose is required for short procedures, although the common practice is to give 24 hours prophylaxis

Contaminated procedures: Treatment course may be required for 5-7 days, although this refers to treatment rather than prophylaxis
