Normally most routine laboratories will look for Salmonella, Shigella and Campylobacter as these are the common causes of gastroenteritis in food poisoning.

However in the setting of a post-op patient who has recently been on antibiotics, analysis for Clostridium difficile toxins should also be requested.

If it is suspected from the history or it is present in other patients the faeces should be processed for norovirus (PCR, antigen detection)
