Prevention of Surgical Infection Through Education

Peripheral I.V. Lines

Duration of IV line is a major risk factor: Infection rate of 5.7 per 1,000 catheter days. Unnecessary IV lines should be removed promptly - When reviewing your patient, also review the need for their IV line.

Where possible, replace IV site every 72 hours

Be sure your patient's IV dressing is clean and intact

Perform hand hygiene before and after IV line insertion. Wear clean gloves and use aseptic (no touch) technique when inserting your IV line.
